Sponsored Programs

The Office of Research and Grants Administration (ORGA) is responsible for managing the development and submission of all grant and contract proposals to external funding sources, as well as the acceptance and non-financial administration of grant and contract awards.  If you are planning to submit a proposal for external funding, please contact ORGA at Grants@cofc.edu.

On behalf of the College of Charleston, ORGA administers grants and contracts from all external funding sources (“sponsors”).  These are different from gifts, which are administered by the College of Charleston Foundation.  A gift is a donation made by a sponsor with minimal restrictions and reporting requirements; gifts typically require that a recipient organization have 501(c)3 tax status in order to receive the funding.  Although the College of Charleston is a non-profit, state-controlled entity, only the College of Charleston Foundation has 501(c)3 status.

On the other hand, grants are made by sponsors in order to promote a particular activity, with certain reporting requirements included in the grant agreement.  Contracts are mutually agreed upon between the College and the sponsor to obtain one or multiple deliverables, usually for a fixed price.  If you’re unsure whether your proposal is for a grant, contract, or gift, please contact ORGA at Grants@cofc.edu. We are here to help!
