Internal Competitions

For External Funding Opportunities

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends program supports individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months at any stage of development. Grants are awarded to individual scholars (organizations are not eligible to apply). Summer Stipends provide $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time. Arrangements can be made to support individual work for other times of the year.

All applications will be given equal consideration in accordance with the program’s evaluation criteria, whether they respond to the Protecting Our Cultural Heritage Initiative or the Standing Together Initiative.

As NEH limits applications to two faculty members per institution, an internal competition may be needed in order to select the two applicants that College of Charleston will nominate for submission to The NEH. If you intend to apply for the Summer Stipends external grant opportunity, you should contact ORGA (andersons@cofc.edu) notifying the office of your intent to apply with an internal letter of intent included in the email.

The submission deadline for the internal letter of intent is Wednesday, August 23, 2022. Internal applications will be reviewed by the College of Charleston's selection committee, and internal applicants will be notified of the committee's decision.

To submit an internal application, fill out the required "NEH Summer Stipend Internal Competition Application" (access to this will be provided upon receipt of internal letter of intent). This information will be held on a secure server with access provided only to the College's selection committee for the internal competition. You will be contacted regarding the decision of the selection committee.

Successful internal applicants must then submit their NEH application through grants.gov by the posted application submission deadline.
